SELECTIVE MUTISM CENTER

EVALUATION

Think your child may have selective mutism (SM)?  We will conduct a thorough evaluation, which includes an in-depth interview with parents, conversations with main classroom teachers, a possible school observation, and a session with your child to determine an appropriate diagnosis.  A feedback session will incorporate educational materials and treatment planning.  You will complete the evaluation stage feeling confident in your understanding of your child's diagnosis and in the individually-tailored plan we will design to help your child overcome SM.
What is SM?

TREATMENT

We treat selective mutism with evidence-based practices such as exposure therapy (part of cognitive-behavioral therapy).  We offer both individual and group treatment options.

During individual treatment, we not only work directly with your child to help him or her climb their own personal "ladder" towards speaking, but we work closely with parents and school professionals to create an environment that supports progress and confidence.

In group and individual intervention, we conduct sessions both in and out of our office, helping children build and practice skills they need to be successful in a variety of settings.

For more information about group treatment for SM, please call the main number and press ext. 1 to reach Dr. Miller.

For more information about individual treatment for SM, please call the main number and press 0 for the new patient line.

CONSULTATION

Occasionally, due to distance, cost, or parent preference, direct intervention with a child is not possible or desired.  In those situations, we offer consultation services, in which we provide ongoing recommendations to parents and schools regarding how best to support a child with selective mutism (SM).  Consultation services are available only when the provider you work with deems them appropriate for the particular needs of your child.
